Overall Impression: South Sunrise is a new classical work by Chilean composer Mauricio Escalona. Opening with the descending tetrachord F – E flat – D flat – C, South Sunrise paints an expansive, desolate picture with an ominous mood. Avoiding complex harmonies, South Sunrise draws attention to the slight dissonances that can occur when multiple instruments play in unison with long tones. The female voice incorporates vocalization almost exclusively with long tones, slight embellishments, and expressive vibrato. The smart use of percussion adds the intensity of a stampede and carries listeners to a dramatic ending. Breathtakingly beautiful, South Sunrise by Mauricio Escalona is an awe-inspiring new work full of drama and suspense.
Strongest Point(s): Mauricio Escalona has mastered using music as a paintbrush. This piece instantly paints a picture, and gradually adds layers of intrigue and intensity. The title «South Sunrise» is also very fitting.
Target Audience Appeal: Fans of orchestral film soundtracks, particularly the BBC Planet Earth series, will be instant fans of this new work by Mauricio Escalona.
